Seasonal and Long-Trip Vehicle Preparation: A Technician-Approved Checklist

Cooling System Readiness
Verify coolant level and condition — orange, green, or pink depending on specification, but never cloudy or rusty. Inspect hoses for swelling, cracking, or soft spots near clamp ends. Test radiator cap hold pressure and confirm the electric fan engages at the correct temperature threshold.

Tires, Pressure, and Tread Depth
Check cold tire pressure against the door jamb specification, not the sidewall maximum. Inspect tread depth with a gauge — four millimeters minimum for wet traction, more for loaded travel. Look for sidewall bulges, uneven wear, and embedded debris.
- Rotate tires if wear patterns indicate alignment drift.
- Confirm spare tire pressure and jack kit presence.
- Adjust pressure for sustained highway loads if manufacturer allows.
Battery and Charging System
High ambient temperature accelerates battery internal corrosion. Load-test the battery and measure charging voltage at idle and two thousand RPM. Corroded terminals increase resistance and can cause no-start events after a vehicle sits in hot parking lots during rest stops.
Belts, Hoses, and Fluid Levels
Inspect serpentine belts for cracking, glazing, and tensioner play. Confirm power steering, brake, and washer fluid levels. Top off only with the correct specification — mixing fluids causes long-term system damage.
HVAC and Cabin Comfort
A functional air conditioning system is a safety factor during extreme heat, preventing driver fatigue. Verify outlet temperature drop and cabin filter condition. Restricted airflow overloads the compressor and reduces fuel efficiency on long drives.
Emergency Kit Essentials
Pack a basic kit including reflective triangles, a flashlight, jumper cables or portable jump pack, first aid supplies, and drinking water. For remote routes, add a phone charger and printed maps as backup navigation.
